National Inventors’ Day

National Inventor’s Day is a day set aside to remember great inventors. February 11th is Thomas Edison’s birthday, so it is only fitting we celebrate National Inventor’s Day.  Not only do we celebrate the inventors, but the spirit of innovation that inspires their creations.

How is National Inventors’ Day Celebrated?

  • Make a list of your personal favorite or most-used inventions (elevator? lights? airplanes? pacemaker?)
  • Use social media to voice support for inventors this day.
  • Spend the day trying to invent something, even if it’s only with paper, scissors, and glue. Engage your children in this activity to “think outside the box”.
  • Read books to your children and/or students that empower them to follow through on their ideas.
  • If you’re in the Washington D.C. area, check out the National Inventors Hall of Fame. It’s a great idea for a field trip as well.

Fun National Inventors’ Day Facts:

  • In 1983 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first National Inventors’ Day.
  • February 11th was chosen as this day since it is the birthday of Thomas Edison, one of the most famous inventors.
  • Many other countries recognize an inventor’s day but usually do so on the birthday of an inventor from their own country.
