National Rescue Dog Day
National Rescue Dog Day is about saving a dog rather than buying a dog. There are thousands of dogs in shelters who need a home. If you are considering getting a dog, call your local shelter and see if there are any dogs available for you to save. The day was created to make pet lovers aware of the four legged pets who need your love and your home. The ASPCA has revealed there are approximately 3.3 million dogs who are taken to shelters every year. When these abandoned and abused animals find their way to a shelter, each one needs a forever home. These dogs are rescue dogs.

- National Rescue Dog Day was founded by Tails That Teachto honor the inspiring ways rescue dogs become apart of the family and to increase awareness about the number of dogs in shelters.
- The day was inspired by rescue dog, Cooper, who was rescued in 2009. He is now the main character in the Tails That Teach book series that teach children how to be and kind and gentle to their pets so they grown up to be compassionate, responsible pet owners.
- Rescue dogs provide a variety of therapeutic benefits. Children, teens, and adults with autism may benefit from services provided by trained rescue dogs.
