International Space Day?

International Space Day is a day dedicated to spread awareness of the mysteries of outer space beyond the twinkling stars. The day  was created to promote the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields among young people. All over the world events are held at local schools, museums and planetariums. Scientific organizations provide highlights of historical flashbacks and pivotal research about all things celestial! It’s not just Science Fiction anymore!

How is the day celebrated?

  • The day encourages the public and especially the youth to learn more about space and space exploration
  • Take a visit to NASA
  • Listen to podcasts and learn about the breakthroughs in space travel, unmanned missions, and theories about space
  • Visit the library or bookstore and learn about the celestial bodies out there, comets, the planetary system
  • Visit your closest space museum and spend the day exploring the exhibitions and learn more about astronomy.


  • Began as Space Day in 1997
  • In 2001 Senator John Glenn pushed for  the day to be renamed International Space Day in the hopes of widening the celebratory telescope lens on an international scale
  • While the average driving speed on a highway is 65 mph – a spaceship travels  5 miles-per-second. That means the station circles the entire planet once every 90 minutes
  • The tallest mountain in the solar system is actually on an asteroid, Rheasilvia
  • The first all women space walk took place on October 18, 2019, with Christina H Koch and Jessica Meir.
