WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY

World Autism Awareness Day is an internationally recognized day to raise the awareness of people who have autism. It further expresses deep concern at the prevalence and high rate of autism in children in all regions of the world and the consequent developmental challenges.

How is World Autism Awareness Day Celebrated?

  • Wear or display blue, the official color of National Autism Awareness Month, to support people living with autism.
  • Many buildings and landmarks will “Light It Up Blue” to raise awareness and show support.
  • Many groups, communities and countries also promote events to raise funds and awareness, including workshops and conferences for families and caregivers.

  • Autism is a developmental disorder that is often characterized by varying degrees of difficulty with social interactions, sensory processing, verbal and nonverbal communication, and restricted or repetitive behaviors.
  • Four to five times as many boys are diagnosed with autism than girls. That’s why blue is the color associated with autism.
  • This day was established on December 18, 2007.
  • More than 200,000 US cases of autism are diagnosed per year.
  • Treatment can help, but this condition can’t be cured
  • There has been about a 30% increase in the number of children affected by autism since 2012.
  • About 1 in every 150 children around the world are affected by autism, and 85% live in low-to-middle income countries.
